A floating pool chlorinator, also known as a floating chlorine dispenser or feeder, ensures your swimming pool stays sanitized. Swimming pool chlorine floaters typically require a 3-inch chlorine tablet verses the smaller 1-inch variety for smaller spas. The tablet slowly dissolves as it chlorinates the water, without dispersing too much at once. Floating pool dispensers can be used in aboveground and inground pools, but make sure your pool manufacturer says it's safe to use one. The chlorine floater must be removed from the water when people are in the pool.

Adjust the pH level in your swimming pool to 7.2 to 7.6. This level is ideal for swimmers because it isn't so high that it burns the eyes or skin yet helps keep the pool clean. This pH range works well with floating chlorine dispensers. Unlock the top of the chlorine dispenser by turning it counterclockwise until it stops. Lift up the top and remove it from the bottom portion of the dispenser. Set aside the top lid. Insert the optional inner cup-shaped screen if your dispenser comes with one to filter out small pieces of the chlorine tablets. A filter isn't required for the chlorinator to function properly. The screen helps once the chlorine tablet starts to dissolve and breaks apart. Insert one 3-inch chlorine tablet into the open dispenser. Never mix different types of sanitizing chemicals in the dispenser. Don't throw loose chlorine tablets in the water; they must be used in the dispenser to avoid unwanted chlorine saturation. Replace the lid and turn it clockwise to lock it in place. You will hear a click when it's properly sealed. Turn the plastic collar at the base of the dispenser counterclockwise. The plastic collar looks like an attached dial. The wider the opening in the slats or grooves in the base collar, the more chlorine is released. Start by turning it halfway so the slats are half open. Place the floating chlorinator in the water. Dunk it completely under the water for several seconds to force air out of the unit, but allow it to bob back up. Only the bottom portion remains underwater. Attach the optional leash or tether to the floater through the hole in the top of the lid. The leash ensures the dispenser stays in one section of the pool so it doesn't float to one end and settle there. Attach the leash to the included pressure-sensitive anchor plate. The anchor plate attaches to most pool surfaces. Place the floating chlorinator in the water. Test the chlorine levels in your pool every day for several days. You may need to adjust the bottom collar to allow more or less chlorine into the water. After two to four days, tether the dispenser to another area of the pool or allow it to float around without one. Replace the chlorine tablet once it dissolves.
